Planning your Activities
Once you have decided on your theme, choose where and when you can get your message across most effectively.
A great way of reaching the general public is to get out and talk to them. Whether you choose to set up a public display or information stand, or use a mobile trailer or bus - visiting local shopping centres, town centres or supermarkets enables you to reach a wide range of people and let them know about the services and information available to them for tackling noise. It is also a great opportunity to get their input and gauge attitudes and expectations.
The following are suggestions of positive promotional activity that you can carry out. When and where you choose to do this activity depends on the time and resources available to you, and what is appropriate in your area.
- Displays - Public displays are a great way of raising awareness about noise issues. Choose a location where you will get a lot of footfall, such as a supermarket or shopping centre. When setting up a display, make sure it is eyecatching and has your message clearly displayed. Try and involve the public by running an opion poll, or organising a prize draw.
- Dress to impress - Dressing up is not only fun, it is guaranteed to draw attention to your campaign. In 2008, the London Borough of Southwarkís Creative Design team dressed up as in giant foam ear costumes and invited the public to sign pledges to reduce their noise. The campaign was so successful that the Mighty Ears have visited various sites since to spread the message about keeping the noise down.
- Going Mobile - Hiring a mobile van or advertising trailor will allow you to spread your message further afield. Why not speak to some other local authorities or organisation in your area and see if you can share a vehicle for the week?
